Customize your community's navigation by reordering tabs, renaming labels, and disabling tabs you don't need — all from community settings.
What You'll Learn
This article explains how community admins and owners can customize their community's tab layout to match their community's unique workflow and branding preferences.
You'll learn how to reorder tabs via drag-and-drop, rename tab labels with custom text, and disable tabs that your community doesn't use — all while maintaining Discussion and About as required tabs.
Tab Customization is a community configuration feature that allows admins and owners to tailor the navigation experience for their community members. Instead of using GHL Customer Care's default tab labels and order, you can reorganize tabs to match your community's workflow, rename tabs to use language that fits your branding, and disable tabs that your community doesn't need.
All customization controls are located in the community settings panel, right alongside the existing Show/Hide Tabs controls. Changes you make are saved immediately and persist across sessions — members will see your customized tab layout whenever they visit the community.

2Key Benefits
Customizing your community's tab layout offers several advantages for both community management and member experience:
Match Your Community's Workflow — Position the most important tabs (like Events or Learning) first so members can quickly access the features they use most.
Use Your Own Language — Rename tabs to match your community's branding and terminology. For example, rename "Learning" to "Courses" or "Events" to "Meetups".
Simplify Navigation — Disable tabs your community doesn't use to reduce clutter and help members focus on the features that matter.
Instant Updates — Changes take effect immediately and persist across sessions. Members see your customized layout every time they visit the community.

Reorder Tabs

Step 5
Disable Unused Tabs
To disable a tab your community doesn't use, click the toggle switch next to the tab name. The toggle will move to the "off" position and the tab will be hidden from all community members. You cannot disable the Discussion or About tabs — the disable toggle is unavailable for these required tabs.
Step 6
Verify Changes
All changes are saved automatically. To verify your customizations, refresh the community page or log in as a member. The tabs will appear in the order you specified, with the custom names you entered, and disabled tabs will not be visible. Your settings persist across sessions — members will see the customized layout every time they visit.
Changes Take Effect Immediately
Tab customizations are saved automatically and persist after page reload. Members will see your customized tab layout immediately without needing to log out or refresh.
4Permissions and Restrictions
Tab customization is a powerful administrative feature with specific permission requirements and built-in safeguards:
Admin and Owner Access Only
Who Can Customize Tabs
Only community admins and owners can rearrange, rename, or disable tabs. Regular members and moderators do not have access to the tab customization controls in community settings.
Required Tabs
Discussion and About Cannot Be Disabled
The Discussion and About tabs provide essential community functionality and cannot be disabled. The disable toggle is not available for these two tabs. You can still reorder and rename them to fit your community's structure.
No Translation Support
Custom Tab Names Are Not Localized
Custom tab names are saved and displayed exactly as entered. GHL Customer Care does not translate custom tab labels — whatever text you type appears the same for all members, regardless of their language settings. Plan your tab names accordingly if your community serves a multilingual audience.
Note
If your community serves a multilingual audience, consider using universally recognized terms or icons when renaming tabs. Custom tab names are not translated and will appear the same for all members.
5Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I reorder the Discussion and About tabs?
Yes. While you cannot disable the Discussion and About tabs, you can reorder and rename them just like any other tab. Use the drag handles to move them to the desired position in your community's tab layout.
Q: Do custom tab names get translated for members in different languages?
No. Custom tab names are saved and displayed exactly as you type them. GHL Customer Care does not translate custom tab labels, so whatever text you enter will appear the same for all members regardless of their language settings. If your community serves a multilingual audience, consider using universally recognized terms when renaming tabs.
Q: What happens if I disable a tab that members are actively using?
When you disable a tab, it is immediately hidden from the community navigation bar for all members. Content within that tab (such as events or courses) is not deleted — it simply becomes inaccessible through the navigation. If you re-enable the tab later, all content will still be available.
Q: Can moderators customize tabs?
No. Only community admins and owners have permission to rearrange, rename, or disable tabs. Moderators and regular members do not have access to the tab customization controls in community settings.
Q: Are tab customizations saved automatically?
Yes. All tab customizations are saved automatically as you make changes. There is no manual save button. Changes take effect immediately and persist across sessions — members will see the customized tab layout every time they visit the community.
Q: Can I reset tabs to their default names and order?
To reset tabs to their default state, manually rename each tab back to its original name (Discussion, Learning, Events, Leaderboard, Members, About) and drag them back to the original order. There is no automatic reset button at this time.
Q: Will my tab customizations be lost if I reload the page?
No. Tab customizations persist across sessions and page reloads. Once you reorder, rename, or disable a tab, that change is saved permanently until you manually change it again. Dedicated integration and end-to-end testing suites verify that renamed and reordered tabs persist correctly after reload.
Q: How do I know if a tab is disabled?
In the community settings panel, disabled tabs show the toggle switch in the "off" position. Members will not see disabled tabs in the community navigation bar. To re-enable a tab, simply toggle the switch back to the "on" position.
